...beyond exercise

About ®

The ® offers an unparalleled experience in exercising, as you move in harmony with the natural rhythms of your own body, reaching no end to the possibilities of movement. From the very first exercise, you are at once immersed in a three-dimensional method which simply feels great. The system is energetic as well as physical, integrating mind, body, and spirit and it serves to meet individuals' specific needs. Whether you are training for a triathlon or rehabilitating a serious back injury, Gyrotonic Expansion System has benefits tailored to accommodate your goals.

Coordination, strength, flexibility

The ® is a low impact system of body training/exercise based on principles extracted from yoga, dance, swimming, and tai chi. It is served by equipment designed to enhance coordination, strength, and flexibility that will allow total freedom of movement. The exercises are performed through spherical awareness and circularity of movement, enabling the user to perform under variable controlled resistance and real sports simulation with no limitation to speed and impact. Special attention is paid to increase the functionality of the spine, resulting in a superior and well-proportioned body that is less prone to injury. Vitality and vigor are increased as the nervous system is stimulated allowing for rejuvenation and optimal function in everyday life.

Juliu Horvath

Juliu Horvath, a Romanian of Hungarian descent, was a professional dancer who developed the ® methodology after an injury cut short his career. While intensively studying and practicing yoga, he began exploring the subtle energies of the body and their relationship to the whole being. As a result, he created a system called "Yoga for Dancers", which he brought to New York City in the 1980's and which evolved into the Gyrokinesis methodology, the basis for the Gyrotonic system. Gyrokinesis movements are non-linear and multi-dimensional. All movements are harmoniously paired with breathing patterns and organized into a flowing workout. There are no static postures, as with some traditional forms of yoga, and the movement is initiated in the spine. Strength and length are achieved equally as range of motion and joint articulation are increased. Juliu invented the Pulley Tower, which adds resistance and facilitates the use of these principles. Eventually he created other pieces of specialized equipment which allow us to move in every possible plane.
