The Method

Smooth, three-dimensional movement that decompresses the spine, builds strength without strain, and leaves you feeling more open and mobile.

What is the GYROTONIC® Method?

The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is a low-impact method of exercise based on principles drawn from yoga, dance, swimming, and tai chi. Its movements are distinctly three-dimensional, using spirals and circular patterns to guide the body through a full range of motion.

GYROTONIC® work is often spine-focused, emphasizing arching and curling initiated from the deep core, known as the seed center. At the same time, the entire body is engaged, creating an integrated, full-body workout. Exercises are performed in sequences that coordinate multiple muscle groups and the breath, with adjustable resistance that builds strength without joint strain. This approach also engages the nervous system, often leaving people feeling more energized and mobile.

The system uses a range of specialized equipment, including the Pulley Tower, GYROTONER®, Leg Extension Unit, Jumping Stretching Board, and ARCHWAY®. Most of these machines use light weights, springs, and pulleys to provide consistent, adjustable resistance and support smooth, controlled movement. The exception is the ARCHWAY®, which uses the body as its own resistance.

The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is appropriate for a wide range of people—from those dealing with back pain after long hours at a desk, to athletes looking to improve performance, to older adults wanting to maintain strength and mobility.

What is the GYROKINESIS® Method?

The GYROKINESIS® Method is the foundation of the GYROTONIC® system and is performed without specialized equipment, typically using a stool, mat, or standing positions. While it shares the same movement principles, GYROKINESIS® relies on the body’s own control rather than external resistance. Classes typically begin seated, then progress to floor and standing work, maintaining a continuous, rhythmic flow.

The practice evolves from gentle, circular motions into more dynamic sequences that mobilize the spine, awaken the joints, and integrate the entire body. Without the use of machinery, GYROKINESIS® offers a more minimal, self-supported way to experience the core principles of GYROTONIC® movement.

A Brief History of the GYROTONIC® Method

The GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Methods were developed by Juliu Horvath, a professional ballet dancer and former Principal with the Houston Ballet.

After a career-ending Achilles tendon injury, Horvath dedicated himself completely to understanding the body and the process of healing. He immersed himself in the study of yoga and meditation, eventually relocating to St. Thomas where he lived simply and devoted himself entirely to practice and exploration.

During this period, he began developing what became GYROKINESIS®—a movement method designed to restore strength, mobility, and coordination. As he continued working with others, he expanded his approach by designing specialized equipment, often building early versions by hand, which evolved into the GYROTONIC® system.

Today, both methods are practiced worldwide in fitness, rehabilitation, and performance settings.
